This can only be detected by direct sunlight, desk light, or a flashlight. I had swirl marks on the vinyl's surface. During this process, I noticed something else. Needless to say, I found a particle that was imbedded in the groove. I also use my desk lamp also to find debris that may cause a record to skip, or create surface noises. I began to develop a pop within the first track. Since then, I must have played both discs four or five times in their entirety. I exchanged out the records manufactures inner sleeves for the Sleeve City 312NRPS Audiophile Inner Sleeves. They also had a velvety appearance to them. I have a desk lamp that illuminates my turntable area. When I first opened the Gatefold, and removed the records from the paper/ poly sleeves, the vinyl discs were in perfect condition. This was an import, so the total cost was $100. This issue really became clear when I purchased the Titanic OST on Black Vinyl six months ago. They began to create Micro Abrasions on the surface of my records. However, this past month I noticed what the sleeves were doing to the surface of my records. Last year I purchased my first fifty pack of Sleeve City's Inner sleeves. Re: Sleeve City Genuine Diskeeper Inner Sleeves (312NRPS) square) or in exact dimensions which may fit some jacket sizes better than others. There are also differences in shape (round bottom vs. This increases the stiffness of the sleeve making it easier to slide into the jacket without bunching up or wrinkling the corners. As an example, the Mo-FI master sleeves are three ply with a layer of paper sandwiched between two plies of HDPE on one side with a single ply of HDPE on the other side. The quality or price differences between HDPE sleeves are typically due to the thickness of the material (as measured in mils) or the number of layers used in a laminate. Less friction equals a lower static charge. The anti-static nature of HDPE is due to the slickness of the materiel which results in less friction when the record is slid in or out. This material has a somewhat hazy appearance compared to the crystal clear look of mylar or polypropylene which are typically used for outer sleeves. Static is also an issue to be minimized. The Library of Congress recommends high-density polyethylene (HDPE) inner sleeves for vinyl records.

I clean once and attempt to keep the record clean thereafter.

I still have a stash of some old VRP sleeves.Īs to fingerprinting records, the theory is that the skin oil will attract contaminants, and those could potentially add noise if ground into the groove. On the other hand, I have a friend who sends me records on occasion to flatten for him, and he uses those rounded bottom style, very flimsy, but they seem to leave no debris on the record and are very easy to slide back into the jacket.

It makes for a thicker package when shelving, but it’s my preference.

To protect the back of the record, I can use: the original sleeve, the literature, inserts or other material that come with the LP, or a unprinted aftermarket jacket. Instead, I use a clear mylar or HDPE outer sleeve for the jacket and slide the re-sleeved record in behind the jacket. Once a record has been cleaned and re-sleeved (I keep any original inners of value), I don’t reinsert the record into the jacket doing so not only causes wear but has the potential to create static. I’m currently using the MA Records inner which I like but it is pricey, and it isn’t easy to handle. I’ve gone through pretty much all of the aftermarket ones.
